In today's world, we all go through trying circumstances In fact, the Bible tells us in Matthew 5:45 that "He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (NKJ) In this imperfect world where sin abides, sooner or later we all get rained on. I'm sure that is why Jesus said, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34 NIV)
In this troubled world, I believe that we can make a difference in at least one person's life everyday. As we go to work, school, the grocery store, gas station, and so one, we can make a difference by our attitude, our words and our actions.
Even if you're having one of those rainy days, it doesn't have to stay that way. You can part the clouds and let some sunshine into your day. The key is to get your mind off yourself and brighten someone else's day. You can accomplish this by doing something good for someone. It could mean simply complimenting a stranger, co-worker or neighbor. If a lady's hair or makeup looks nice - tell her. If someone is wearing a color you like or looks especially good in a color - tell them. I have gotten big smiles in return for paying someone a genuine compliment. We need to learn to minister good to people wherever we go.
That is what Jesus did. The Word of God tells us in Acts 10:38 that Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. Jesus went around doing good everywhere He went. We can too.
However, when we get right down to it what does "good" mean? It is a commonly used word. Yet, the whole concept of good and goodness actually comes from the concept of love. We know this is true because God is love and His love is demonstrated by His goodness. He is good to people all the time even when they do not deserve it. According to Webster's Dictionary good has many different meanings: of a favorable character or tendency; bountiful, fertile; comely, attractive; suitable, fit; sound, whole; agreeable, pleasant; wholesome, considerable, ample; full; well-founded; true.
Words like bountiful, agreeable, pleasant, ample and full seem to indicate that goodness can flow out of our hearts like an abundant overflow. That is what happens when you follow Jesus and let the Holy Spirit lead you. Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit and went about doing good everywhere He went. God's love flowed out of Him like a river of water, bringing refreshing and healing to people everywhere.
The same anointing power that was on Jesus is available to every born again, spirit-filled believer. That is what Jesus meant when he said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the [good] works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father (John 14:12 (NKJ). God's love and healing power can flow out of us to help and heal people in this sick and dying world and it can all start with doing good.
On a small scale, a kind word can bring healing to a hurting or wounded heart. I believe the saying is true, "Little things mean a lot." Look for opportunities to speak kind words to people everywhere you go in your daily life. When you go out to eat, greet the busboy who is clearing away the dishes and tell him that you appreciate his efforts. Thank people for their service even if they are only doing what is expected of them. Give a tip to the fellow at the car wash and thank him for doing a good job. Act like Jesus!
Someone once said, "If you see a need and you have the power or ability to meet that need, do it!" If your neighbor has surgery, offer to help by cooking a meal, doing their dishes and laundry. Giving of ourselves is one of the best ways to do good works. You will not only make their day but you will bring glory to God.
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matt 5:16 (NKJ)
God sees our good works and has promised to reward us for them. But even if we did not receive a reward from our Father, we would still have the reward of knowing that we had blessed another person by brightening their day. Let your light shine!
