The Two Major Works of The Holy Spirit

  1. Title:    The Two Major Works of The Holy Spirit Gen. 2:17
17    But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.  (NKJ)

4191 muwth (mooth); a primitive root: to die (literally or figuratively); causatively, to kill:  (Strongs Concordance)

KJV-- X at all, X crying, (be) dead (body, man, one), (put to, worthy of) death, destroy (-er), (cause to, be like to, must) die, kill, necro [-mancer], X must needs, slay, X surely, X very suddenly, X in [no] wise.  (Strongs Concordance)

This phrase you shall surely die in the Hebrew is actually two words.  The first word is "mowt" and the second word is "taamuwt".    Both of these words are derivatives of the root word "muwth."This phrase is better translated in death (or dying) you shall die.  The Hebrew  word "muwth" is found in this passage twice in a row.   However, in the King James and other translations, the first word is translated you shall surely then the same word is translated a second time die.  It is important to understand what happened to Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God.  We know that they did not die physically the day that they ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  The Bible records that Adam lived for more than 900 years.  So what happened?  The fact is that they died spiritually, and as a result of dying spiritually, they ultimately died physically.

John 5:24
24    "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.   (NKJ)

1 Pet 1:23
23    having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,   (NKJ)
John 3:16
16    "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.   (NKJ)First, tongues is used as a devotional prayer language between a believer and God alone.  It is like speaking to God in secret code.
Conclusion:     The Holy Spirit within us, otherwise known as salvation is a free gift to all who call upon the name of the Lord Jesus.  We only have to receive it.   It is not by works.  It is not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord.  (Zech 4:6)     The Holy Spirit upon us, also known as being filled with the Holy Spirit, is the second work of the Holy Spirit subsequent to salvation.  If we are filled with the Spirit of God we should have the evidence which the Bible calls speaking in tongues.  Like the first work of the Holy Spirit, we only have to receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit.  We do not have to work for it.   We do not have to wait or tarry for it.  We only have to receive it by faith

  1. Text:   Ezek 36:26,   Acts 1:8

    Ezek 36:26
26    "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.    (NKJ)

    Acts 1:8
8    "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."   (NKJ)

  1. Theme:    The Holy Spirit within you (the first work of the Holy Spirit otherwise known as being born again) is the key to the New Testament and is the most important issue that men on the earth must consider in order to enter the Kingdom of God.  Once you are born again God desires to pour out the Holy Spirit upon you (the second work of the Holy Spirit also known as being filled with the Spirit) whereby enduing you with power and ability for service in the Kingdom of God.
  1. The Holy Spirit within you
  1. The Holy Spirit upon you
  1. Body:
  1. The Holy Spirit within you
    1. Why must a man be born again?

John 3:1-6
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  (NKJ)

  1. Man must be born again because he is dead spiritually.  Man died when God told Adam and Eve they could eat the fruit from all the trees in the Garden of Eden but the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil that was in the middle of the Garden, He specifically told them NOT to eat.
  1. Disobedience to God is called sin.  Sin Separates us from God.  Separation from God is called spiritual death.

Rom 6:23
23    For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NKJ)

As a result of sin they died spiritually

    1. What is the new birth in Christ Jesus?
  1. The new birth happens when the Holy Spirit comes within us. The Holy Spirit recreates our human spirit by the power of the Word of God and at the same time brings with Him the nine fruits of the Spirit within us.

2 Cor 5:17
17    Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.   (NKJ)

Gal 5:22-23
22    But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23    gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.    (NKJ)

  1. Even the disciples had to be born again or God is a respecter of persons.

Acts 10:34
34    Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:   (KJV)   x-ref  2 Chr 19:7

John 20:17-23
17    Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'"
18    Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
19    Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you."
20    Now when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21    So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
22    And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
23    "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."   (NKJ)

  1. Who can be saved?

Acts 2:39
39    "For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."   (NKJ)

John 6:37
37    "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.   (NKJ)

John 3:16
16    "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.   (NKJ)

  1. How can I be saved?
  1. You must understand that salvation is not something you can earn but is a free gift.

Rom 5:17
17    For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.   (NKJ)

Eph 2:8-9
8    For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
9    not of works, lest anyone should boast.   (NKJ)

  1. Salvation has already been provided by Jesus sacrificial work; just receive it according to the word of God.

Rom 10:9-10
9    that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10    For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.   (NKJ)

John 20:22
22    And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.   (NKJ)

  1. The Holy Spirit upon you
    1. Wasn't I filled with the Holy Spirit when I was born again?
  1. The world can only receive salvation which is also known as being born of the Spirit.

John 3:16-17
16    "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17    "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.    (NKJ)

John 3:3-6
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  (NKJ)

  1. The world cannot receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit until they are first born of the Spirit.

John 14:16-17
16    "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--
17    "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.   (NKJ)

John 15:26
26    "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.    (NKJ)

  1. We see two distinct works of the Holy spirit in the lives of the disciples. First the disciples had to be born again or God would be considered a respecter of persons.   The disciples were born again on the Jewish Feast of First Fruits ( the same day of the resurrection of Jesus).

  1. Secondly we see that once the disciples were born again then and only then were they were able to be filled with the Holy Spirit.  The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost 50 days after the Feast of First Fruits. This is the second work of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:1-5
1    The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2    until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,
3    to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
4    And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;
5    "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."   (NKJ)

Acts 2:1-4
1    Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2    And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3    Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4    And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(NKJ)

    1. What is the purpose of the Holy Spirit Coming upon me?
  1. To endue the Believer in Christ Jesus with power for service.

Acts 1:8
8    "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."   (NKJ)

  1. To help the born again believer and lead him into truth.

John 15:26
26    "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.    (NKJ)

  1. The Holy Spirit brings the word of God to our remembrance.

John 14:26
26    "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.   (NKJ)

  1. Why tongues?  Isn't that weird!?!  The gift of tongues has three different purposes in the body of Christ.
  1.

1 Cor 14:2
2    For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.   (NKJ)

1 Cor 14:14-21
14    For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15    What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.
16    Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say?
17    For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18    I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
19    yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20    Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.
21    In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; and yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord.   (NKJ)  x-ref  Isa 28:11

Mark 16:17
17    And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;    (KJV)

Acts 10:45-47
45    And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
46    For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,
47    "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"   (NKJ)

  1. Secondly, tongues and its companion gift, called interpretation of tongues, is used for the purpose of God communicating with His people on a corporate or personal level.

Isa 28:11
11    For with stammering lips and another tongue he will speak to this people,   (NKJ)

1 Cor 14:4-6
4    He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5    I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6    Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?  (KJV)

  1. Thirdly the Holy Spirit uses the gift of tongues and interpretation of tongues as a ministry gift.

1 Cor 12:28-13:2
28    And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
29    Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?
30    Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
31    But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

CHAPTER 13

1    Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
2    And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.   (NKJ)

  1. Haven't tongues passed away?

1 Cor 13:8-10
8    Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
9    For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
10    But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.   (NKJ)

  1. The gifts of the Spirit.
  1. There are nine gifts of the Spirit given to the Body of Christ.

1 Cor 12:4-11
4    There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5    There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
6    And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
7    But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8    for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9    to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10    to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11    But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
